A Very Unfortunate Portrait by rose-colligan A Very Unfortunate Portrait by rose-colligan
Sunny, Violet and Klaus from the series of books A Series of Unfortunate Events.

FULL VIEW PLEZ

I think what I love most about these books besides the amazing characters is the fact that the author is concerned about and critiques the notion of under-valueing and under-estimating the mind and awareness of the child. Something I feel is very important for illustration as well. I remember as a kid I used to love freaky, wierd illustrations in books. An obvious one to come to mind was Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Children love this book, but it was initially shunned because it was deemed to frightening for them.

really sorry guys, I had to put a watermark on this piece and down the size because some asshat decided it would be cool to sell it as their own art on t-shirts.

Therefore I'm no longer allowing the download etc...sorry...one person ruined for all. :(

Hey, I'm doing a review on the Netflix show that just came out. I was wondering if you would let me use your deviation as part of it. I wouldn't be making any money off it as I'm a new youtuber and am not monetising my videos. Would that be okay?

I found this through a vast blizzard of Olaf from Frozen fan art.

To be honest, Count Olaf is the very first thing that I think of when I here the name Olaf. I even plan on doing this thing for Christmas where these characters create a snowman, and one of them decides to name it Olaf, and the other, who is a witch, decides to modify the snowman to make it resemble the Count, using rocks for his unibrow and the infamous V.F.D. tattoo.

"--the fact that the author is concerned about and critiques the notion of under-valueing and under-estimating the mind and awareness of the child." Fun fact, ASOUE was what made me lose my childhood innocence. Around 2013, I began reading the books for this reading project for my school, and while doing so, I came to realize how much of a sh*t-hole the world really was (and I was 11 when this happened). Sure, I watched the movie quite a few times as a kid (mostly because of how entertaining Count Olaf was), without reading the books (though my sister was a huge fan of the books and introduced me to them AND Harry Potter), but I came to be a bit more critical about movies around late 2014, and I find ASOUE (the movie) to be one of the most underrated movies of the 2000s, even if it DID deviate significantly from the source material (at least it wasn't trying to pander to a specific audience like Twilight or Hunger Games).

"
Children love this book, but it was initially shunned because it was deemed to frightening for them." Damn Puritans. "Will somebody PLEASE think of the children?" People wanted Titanic to get an R rating not because of all the people who died in the film, but because of naked Kate Winslet. I believe nudity shouldn't be censored that much, since violence is pretty much WORSE. I'm kind of like Don Bluth, in the sense that I think it is likely that children might be able to handle this stuff, even without a happy ending. I guess that's why I like A Series of Unfortunate Events. Even with the movie's ending (though you could pretend that afterward, the events of The Miserable Mill happened in a film that was never made), even with the confusing nature of The End's ending, the series was actually pretty interesting, even if it did lead up to the idea that there are some mysteries that might never be solved.

I read the entire series as a little kid only to be disappointed by the last book...I'm sorry, but that ending just infuriated me. But the over all story was awesome.

I absolutely love this by the way. The whole steam punk kind of feel with the border is very cool and the color choices just add to the whole effect. I can tell just from this one picture that you have a lot of talent my friend. :)

I began the books around 1st or 2nd grade and I remember being enraged with the movie in fourth grade. The books were great for children, because they challenged us and treated us like we were smart enough for them, the movie treated us like idiots and was extremely insulting. That being said I love this picture it really captures the books imo .

Sadly, like a fool, I never read the books. But, I did see the movie. But, then again, the books are always better. But still, if I liked the movie, I know I would have ADORED the books.

You and I are in the same boat here: I love eerie illustrations found in some novels and storybooks. In fact, such pictures got me started on my strange monster stories when I was eight.

"Where The Wild Things Are" was one of my favorite books when I was seven. In fact, I did a book report on it many times.

Most of the girls chose "The Babysitter's Club" and whatnot but I was always the freaky weirdo that focused on monster or children's horror stories.

Though relentlessly teased about them, I embraced the dark or mischievous stories nonetheless. <3

This is brilliant ! You've really captured the "timeless" sense of the book, where the characters aren't exactly old fashioned, but they don't belong in the modern era either. And I like that in your picture they actually look like children - the look on Violet's face seems especially vulnerable ( I always thought that in the actual illustrations for the books they look a little bit too mature). The steampunk motif is especially effective - I like how it gives the sense they have no power - the direction of their lives is determined by the system's "machine", rather than their own decisions. Also ( sorry for loonng rant, I do that) I love the sepia colour scheme. Great stuff !
