Wow lookie at that...its been about a year sinse I updated my journal!

man what a year 2009 was. Learnt heaps of awesome stuff designing 3D models and doing some animation. this year its into Maya :) should be epic..liking it much more than Lightwave..the graph editor equals love. The IK equals omg Lightwave what were you thinking...:|

Had some pretty major emotional issues last year too which Im clearing up and throwing away.

Also getting back into some traditional drawing this year. I have a little exhibition at the end of the year that I need to pump some good work out for. I have some ideas..which grow at night and stop me sleeping..lol so hopefully Ill get that all underway soon.

Thanks for all your support!

News and stuff:)

News and stuff

hey guys!

Havn't done an update in a while so thought Id better:)

I know I havent really uploaded much for ages but its because all the stuff i have been working on cant really be shown at the mo. Im doing some more work experience as the concept artist for another small film in Auks.

My main bit of news though is that Im going back to Uni this year. Ive finally realised just how much work is going to be involved to be a concept artist and I feel like I need to take it a bit more seriously. Ive started a sketchbook which I will be uploading to conceptart.org soon. Need to get them critiques a-comin. Im trying to draw everyday, even if its just a doodle as I think that is sooo important.

Anyway back to the study...Im going to do a one year Post-grad doing 3D character design and animation. I want to start understanding my characters in a 3D way, as a form in a space rather than just a flat surface. I also want to explore gesture and expression in my characs more. The course starts in April or May but only 20 people can get in for each course. I have my interview tomorrow so i hope all goes to plan!

I bought some really amazing books yesterday that I just cant put down...bit of a bummer when I have work to do..The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams (who framed roger rabbit) its amazing. It has all sorts of useful formulars for animating and principals for understanding how to create your own interesting movement and expression.:D

Onward to much hard work....:D

hello from LA! :D

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 15, 2008, 6:19 PM

Hello from LA!

hey everyone! I'm in LA! wooohoooo :D Im writing this on my lap top in the hotel because they have free internet hehe. Only arrived yesterday but its been awesome so far. This morning we had breakfast at the Disney Resort Goofys Kitchen. It was amazing. So much food and the characters were all so cute :D I got photos with all my favs. We head to Disneyland tomorrow as we are a bit to tired to today. Will head to the Downtown Disney district soon for some shopping. Will update later :)

whew I totally didnt update this!

well I gotta say I had the best time of my life :) Disneyland was amazing! My fav ride was defenatly Indiana Jones. We totally wanted to go on it again the second day we went but the line was friggin huuuge so we waited till after the fireworks when heaps of people left...woohooo no line!...we got all buckled up on the ride and then the staff informed us that the ride had bunged out and we had to get off ;( lol it was kinda funny actually...they gave us a fast pass for use only on that day....O_0 wahahahahahaha
also while we were waiting for Indie, we went on the Winnie the Pooh ride....wow how did Disney get away with that little number!!!!...more trippy than Fear and Loathing...

Pirates was also totally awesome...we filmed the whole ride but it came out too dark...I can listen to it though ;P I lined up to get a photo with Jack too haha...seems like we were lucky to catch him though..sinse a week later and he wouldve been fired...man I wouldve been pissed if Id missed out by a week lol.

The parade was awesome, and had this hilariously cheesy music that I couldnt get out of my head for weeks...:D

The next day we went to the Warner Studios. That was totally awesome seeing that backlot <3. oh oh and we saw sooo many amazing costumes! Sweeney, Charlie and the Choc Factory and a whole room dedicated to Harry Potter. It was quite a mish to get there though haha...2 hours on the bus, half an hour on the train (we got on the wrong train to begin with) and then an hour walk because again we went the wrong way. It was sooo figgin hot as well, I was greatful for the free coupon for a gelato at the Warner cafe. :D

On the Friday we went to Hollywood Blvd and the Hollywood History Musuem. Took photos of all ma favs on the Walk and the handprints. hehe I put my feet in Johnny's feet :D the HHM was awesome...more gorgeous costumes...including Charlie Chaplin's Dictator outfit.

On Sat we had an LA tour. We totally nearly f'd that up by missing the bus to get to Long Beach...but luckily it turned up late. Anyway it was an awesome full day tour around LA and up into Beverly Hills...saw lots of stars mansions lol. Then we headed to Venice beach and I was sooo uber excited coz there were squirrels! eeeeeeep! that was so excitin..(we dont have those in NZ if you didnt know...infact we have practicaly nothing...just birds and lizards.)..

On Sun we decided to have a lax day at....Walmart and Sears whahahahahahaha...we would see the mall everyday on the way into LA downtown so decided to go take a look..Walmart looks exactly like a store we have here called the Warehouse and Sears looks exactly like Farmers :P

Monday was our Universal Studios day...the Studio tour was hilarious...especially the Jaws special effects simulator..we had these two little girls on our tour that were paralitic the whole ride..
The first thing we went on was the House of Horrors. Coming from Disneyland, I had been lulled into a false sense of security..and thought it would be some cute 'horror house'...man was I wrong or what...its a walk through maze with actors who jump out at you. It was the singular most scary thing I have ever experienced in my life...it was bloody awful..I was shuffling along beside my boyfriend on the brink of a panic attack..It wasnt classic horror either..which I actually quite like...it was that contemporary style...you know like Saw and all that...so not into it..obviously it often does get to much for people because I later realised there were exit signs every 10 metres or so..I was too paralysed to realise it at the time thoguh...eeeeeep! never again..
Anyway...after I had gotten over that...I had a very enjoyable time...Spongebob was kinda scary though haha...he spyed us with our camera and came galloping towards us like a possessed child..lol :D

The next few days were spent shopping and laxing out. I had sooo mcuh fun and I really want to go back! I actually quite liked LA as a city...it wasnt nearly as much of a stress as I thought it would be....just like a bigger and better Auckland...with cooler stuff :) all the Americans we talked to were very nice and helpful...one guy even rang the bus company for us. People seemed to understand us ok too...lol I think maybe they liked our accents :P
it was pretty cool seeing the US elections too.

lol I keep adding to this...Food was ok, but quite hard out..how do you Americans handle that crazy strong icecream and chocolate milk??? O_0 I lived on Wetzels Pretzels...pepperoni was guuuuud. I also loved churos and Snapple....ohhhh Snapple how I miss you </3

till next time...

Exciting Illustration Contract!

Exciting Contract!

hey guys,

I have just been given the most amazing news I could ever hope for at this time. I have recieved an incredable illustration contract through my agent. I am sooo excited! :D

I cant say too much about it at this stage for obvious copyright reasons, but I can say that it is a contract with a prolific publisher in England, is probably a 'trade' book- meaning its not just for an educational reader, it is an actual book you can buy at a shop, weeeee royalties maybe!-, it is a VERY well known and loved English classic and it is set in the early Victorian period- my absolute fav.

The most astounding thing is the paycheck......because its a contract from England it translates into over $30,000 for 15 illustrations and a jacket cover....I love you English Pound <3

So basically I am going to be a veeeeeeery busy beaver over the next few months and may not be on as much as usual. Also I wont be updating with any new illustrions for the next few months. Commisions are very much closed :)

bye for now!

ok, so im back from the 48 hour film comp!.

For those of you who dont know what this is, basically its an annual national competion open to pretty much anyone. You make a team, get given a genre and then have exactly 48 hours to make a film with it. This was my first year doing it and I was the Art Dept. for my team. They were all compete randoms who i had never met before and i would be spending an intire weekend with them....(but what was wierd is that out of complete randomness i happened to know TWO of my teammates...yes NZ is a very small country lol!)....

All 10 of us met up at this girl's flat. I knew instantly that we were all going to get along really well, and i was right.

At 7pm our team mate came back with our genre. (how it works is all team leaders-about180 this year-met to pick the genre for the film out of a hat and the rest of the team is not allowed to know what it is until everyone is released) We got crime. there were a few other things we had to include as well.

basically as soon as she arrived back all hell broke loose. Brainstorming began, then it was my task to design costumes and decide on props. I had to work furiously. The writer was upstairs making the script, sending post it notes down the stairs for what we would need. When she was done we had a read through.

The co-director had organised some mint locations for shooting, so once we had done the read through it was time to start shooting the night scenes. She had organised with the aviation dept. at the airport to shoot in this AWESOME tunnel that looked exactly like the tunnel with the Dementors in the beginning of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. We were there from 12am-3am. It was bloody FREEZING! I was on hair and makeup so i had to keep touching up the actors
We got home at 4am and were allowed 1 hour sleep before we had to go to the next location.

It was here that I learnt i was to be in the film, lol! i had about half an hour to learn my lines while another scene was being shot. Kinda hard when youv only had one hour sleep!

Then it was home for breakfast. The directors cooked the whole crew French toast!

After that we had to get organised for the next shoot, which i was in again so i had to learn more lines. Then we had one more location to go to and we were done shooting.

We wrapped at about 3pm which was amazing, and then the directors had to edit all night. I hope they got it in on time tonight because it has to be in by exactly 7pm or you are disqualified.. We havnt seen the final product and we wont until Tues night when the heats start at the Paramount Theatre. Im REALLY stressed about seeing my mug on the big screen hahaha my acting was seriously atrocious

Anyway it was one of the most fun and amazing things I have ever done. My team was awesome and the (actual) actors were SUCH crack ups. The team was really onto it and organised and proffesional. Probs because they had been doing it for the past 4 years. They knew all the ins and outs of how to make a film and even had one of those cool clapper things for the start of each shoot:D It was such an interesting experience and i cant wait till next year!!

Well it would seem that I got payed a few hundred more than I was originally going to get for that contract, so that makes up for it a bit.

EDIT: hello people! just got back from my holiday up north. 12 hours on the bus XP The Big Day Out was soooo amazing! Bjork was just awesome with her crazy costumes and stage backdrops, and she played army of me, my fav! and Rage against the machine was just insane, i was to scared to go within 500 meters of the stage. it was extremly crowded for such a small space about 45k i think and it was soooooo hot! apparently it was about 45C in the Boiler Room (techno rave type stuff), and i can believe it too: lots of icky sweatyness everywhere XP
also thanks for the favs and stuff while i was away, i try to thank everyone but if i missed anyone, sorry! and thankyou!!

Im working on a lemony snicket piece at the moment so that should be up soonish hopefully, then i gotta get started on the HP Art Project pieces and after that i will do some of my own character stuff again me thinks:D

BTW SWEENEY TODD IS AN ARTISTIC MASTERPIECE! GO SEE IT ASAP!<3

Thankyou to everyone who has commented/faved/watched me over the short time I have been here this year, I really appreciate it :D
